#1 Laurens

The community of Laurens is easily recognized as a traditional southern town, noted for its warm hospitality, great food, and the historic courthouse in the middle of the city. The city’s economic hub is agriculture, and it has been for many years. Told, the Old 96 District, as the downtown is often called, is also noted for its farmers markets and small, family-owned businesses.

However, the city has grown and changed over time, becoming more of a hub for tech and manufacturing.  For those moving to Laurens, there is plenty to do to explore the area, including the Laurens County Museum, take a wine-tasting tour, explore Musgrove Mill State Park, a noted historic site, and take in the open waterfront on Lake Greenwood State Park.

#2 Newberry

Another affordable place to live in South Carolina is Newberry. A small town, located less than 40 miles from Greenwood, provides a wide range of benefits to those living here. It is a beautiful location for hiking and mountain climbing, but is also open to big, open spaces including the Wells Japanese Gardens.

With stunning Victorian architecture and fabulous farmer’s markets, Newberry offers the small town charm that much of South Carolina is easily recognized for.

Finding an affordable place to live in South Carolina is easier to do than many realized. A state that is easily noted for being more affordable than many others, it has a number of smaller communities with much to offer.

#3 Gaffney

Gaffney is the type of place that blends young families and seniors in a beautiful, natural environment. It is close enough to both the mountains and the beach to make a weekend getaway of any type easy to do. The city may be known for its peaches (they seem to always be in season), but it has long been a valuable city from a historical standpoint as well. You’ll find several historic places and monuments to explore here, including the Cowpens National Battlefield and Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail.

The affordable living makes Gaffney a place to do it all for less, but there are some great assets here too. For example, if you enjoy the outdoors, Jolly Park, City Hall Park, and McCluney Park offer walking trails, sports fields, and ample room to explore the outdoors. It is also home to the Cherokee County Veterans Museum, the Gaffney Little Theater, and the Gaffney Art Gallery.

#4 Greenwood, South Carolina

Greenwood, located in the western portion of the state, has benefits to offer, including a low cost of living. The community is also noted for its growing economy, including in the areas of manufacturing, textiles, and pharmaceuticals. While these are some of the industries that have been present here for generations, other industries continue to expand, including in the areas of healthcare and finance.

Aside from the economy, the cost of living for this moderately warm community is very low in terms of utilities and transportation. At the same time, there is a wide range of outdoor amenities to benefit from, including exceptional access to Lake Jocassee, fishing and boating opportunities throughout the area’s lakes, and the Sumter National Forest for hiking trails.

With numerous community events and festivals throughout the year, as well as Greenwood’s cultural events such as the art exhibitions, it is a diverse area with much to offer. That does not even touch on the quality weather that still gives people a four-season year.

#5 Sumter

The community of Sumter has much to offer. Its central location in the state makes it an ideal choice for those who want to live close to it all – with the mountains on one side and the oceanfront on the other. The city has a rich history and a progressive spirit to it, and quite a unique feel. It is quite beautiful, especially along one of the lakes in springtime, and its mild temperatures throughout the year make for fabulous wintertime hikes and summertime water play. The city has more than 30 parks, as well as the Swan Lake Iris Gardens, which is noted for being the home to 8 types of swans.

The lower cost of living, including affordable housing and utilities, makes it easier to buy a larger home here, often with a substantial amount of living space. However, this is very much a family-like community where many people know each other. Though it has a number of manufacturing areas and service-oriented businesses, it still feels like a small town.
