Sumter is a city in South Carolina with about 40,000 residents. The median price for a home in Sumter is $134,100 and for rent, the median is $748 per month. Some families move to Sumter, rent a home at first, and then save up to buy one later. The median household income is $38,500 and the median age is 35 years old. This median age is four years younger than the state average because many young families with children live in Sumter. Sumter is northeast of the expansive Manchester State Forest, which is a great place to go hiking, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, and camping.

Millwood

Millwood is the best area in Sumter, yet the homes are still relatively reasonable to buy for about $40,000 above the median price for the city. Millwood is located on the southwestern side of the city. Many do not mind paying a slight premium to live there for the convenience of the location and the quality of the neighborhood. There are good public schools like Millwood Elementary in this neighborhood and others that are nearby. Sumter Career and Technology Center is in this area. High school students can attend Sumter High School, which is in between Millwood and Ivey Hall.

Home Styles

There are lots of housing tracts in this area that are adjacent to the Millwood Elementary School. Children who are living in these homes can walk or bicycle to school when the outside weather is decent. Homes in this neighborhood are a mixture of ranch style and colonial style. One-story bungalows made out of brick and wood are popular with young families. The mixture of homes in this sector is that about half of them were built in the 1950s and 1960s while the other half were built between 1970 and 2000.

Things To Do

Swan Lake is an excellent place for a pleasant afternoon picnic. Stroll around the lake or sit on the park benches to relax while feeding the ducks and geese that make the lake their home. There is also the beautiful Iris Gardens at Swan Lake to enjoy. A walking path that leads from the Millwood Elementary along the Second Millpond on the left and the Green Swamp on the right is a fun place to take a walk and do some birdwatching with the kids.

Ivey Hall

Ivey Hall is south of downtown Sumter. The public schools found in this neighborhood are Kingsbury Elementary, Wilder Elementary, and Bates Middle School. High school students can go to Sumter High school. Families who have children can go to public schools near their homes from kindergarten to high school and not have to go out of this neighborhood.

Home Styles

This neighborhood has many home styles to choose from that include cottage-style bungalows, built right after WWII for the troops that came back home, to luxury mansions and private grand estates. Most of the homes are smaller with the average home having two to three bedrooms and up to 2,000 square feet. The newer homes are larger and up to 3,000 square feet. The few large mansion estates can be 5,000 square feet or more.

Ivey Hall has a median home price of $142,000 and the median monthly rent is $1,327.

Things To Do

Sumter Memorial Stadium is a great place to see football games and live outdoor concerts. The private Sunset Country Club has a beautiful golf course.

Carolina Gardens

This is an area that is conveniently located near all the amenities and downtown. There are four public schools in this part of town. They are Crosswell Drive Elementary, Willow Drive Elementary, Alice Drive Elementary, and Alice Drive Middle School. The University of South Carolina-Sumter campus and Morris College are both in this area.

Home Styles

Most of the homes in this area are fairly large and were built between 1970 and 2000. This neighborhood has many large lots and mature landscaping and established trees. The housing tracts are mixed in among retail areas, office complexes, university campuses, and some light industrial buildings. It is possible to live, work, and go to school in this neighborhood.

Carolina Gardens has a median home price of $159,089 and the median monthly rent is $1,524.

Things To Do

Palmetto Park is next to the University of South Carolina campus. It has six baseball fields, one large baseball stadium, a running track, and the Palmetto Tennis Center. The YMCA is nearby the university as well. Smaller shops and restaurants line Broad Street, which is the main thoroughfare that runs through this neighborhood. Also, on Broad Street is the large Sumter Mall with many national retail stores and Westmark Plaza Shopping Center with more shops and a movie theater. North of Highway 378, which runs east/west, there are the Crystal Lakes Golf Course and Julia Lester Dillon Park with six baseball fields and two running tracks.
