What Items Need Climate Controlled Storage?

Back To Index

Self-storage units can be quite beneficial for anyone who is in the middle of a move, getting ready for someone new to move in their house, or who just needs a bit of extra space. However, contrary to popular believe, it isn't as easy as just renting a storage unit, moving items in, and then being done.

It's likely you have several items that require special attention while in storage. The main ones are those that are sensitive to temperature fluctuations or humidity. These are the items that require climate-controlled storage.

What is Climate-Controlled Storage?

Climate controlled storage is a feature that keeps a unit's indoor temperature at a set level, typically between 55 degrees Fahrenheit and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, year-round, and that maintains a constant level of humidity. Essentially, this is a dehumidifier, humidifier, air conditioner, and heater all in one.

The question is, what type of items should you put in climate-controlled storage? The answer is found here.

Wooden Furniture

If your wooden furniture is exposed to an excessive amount of moisture over time, it may begin to rot, warp or crack. If you are planning to store any type of furniture made of wood, such as entertainment centers, dressers, nightstands, end tables, chairs and tables, bed frames, or anything else, then it's essential that you invest in climate-controlled storage.

Household Appliances

Refrigerators, microwaves, ovens, dishwashers, and washers and dryers also require climate-controlled storage solutions. This is because the climate control feature protects the electronic and mechanical parts from getting cracked or rusted. If this happens, the item in question may suffer permanent damage.

When storing appliances, of any type, it's a good idea to clean and dry them thoroughly. Also, remember to remove any water hoses. This will help prevent the build up of mold and mildew inside.

Protecting Artwork

It doesn't matter if you are storing a self-made, Pinterest inspired craft or fine piece of artwork, choosing climate-controlled storage is a smart option. This is true for the art itself, as well as art supplies.

Even if you plan to keep the artwork in a file cabinet or in diameter tubes (which is recommended) in your unit, it is still important for you to choose a unit that has a maintained temperature. For art, the humidity level should be at approximately 50 percent and the temperature between 70- and 75-degrees Fahrenheit.

It's also a good idea to put your craft supplies in a climate-controlled unit. All fabric should be protected from any moisture and UV exposure. Put these types of items in plastic bags before storing them to add an extra layer of protection.

Delicate Clothing

Are you planning on swapping out your winter wardrobe for your summer items? Or perhaps you need to store away your wedding gown? If so, climate-controlled storage is a great option to keep clothing in good condition. Once you have washed and cleaned everything properly, make sure there's a constant level of humidity in the unit you choose.

The last thing a person wants is to find that mold and mildew has made it into their clothing. This is especially the case if the items will be in storage for several months. It's a good idea to use plastic storage bins over a cardboard box to prevent any moisture from reaching your clothing.

Business Inventory and Documents

When it comes to storing any type of business inventory or documents, climate-controlled storage is the only way to ensure these items remain damage free. This type of unit will prevent any type of fading, discoloration, or even the chance that the documents will dissolve when exposed to moisture.

Family Photos & Heirlooms

When you are storing photos, you should always choose a climate-controlled unit. Not only this, but also make sure to use boxes or albums that are approved or that have passed the Photographic Activity Test. This will help to make sure these precious memories remain damage-free.

Also, if the temperature happens to get too high in a location where photos are on top of one another, then the prints may begin to deteriorate and blend together. As a result, it's best to store photos facing away from one another, even if they are in albums.

The Benefits of Climate Controlled Storage

If you want to ensure that your items remain damage free and in-tact while in storage, then it's a good idea to invest in a climate-controlled. It's especially a good idea if you live in an area with extreme temperatures or a city where the weather fluctuates. While this may be a bit more of an investment initially, it's worth it in the long run.

Questions to Ask Yourself if You're Still Unsure About Climate Control

Still not sure if you need climate controlled storage? Try asking yourself these questions. If you answer yes to any of these questions, you should consider opting for a climate controlled storage unit.

  • Will the item get mold or mildew?
  • Are your items sensitive to heat or cold?
  • Does your belongings have sentimental value?
  • Is it expensive to replace your belongings?
  • Was it designed to be stored in a climate controlled temperature like artwork?
