About Dothan, AL

Within the city limits, the population of Dothan is 71,072 (2020 census); however, if you include the surrounding areas that make up the Greater Dothan metropolitan area, the population is closer to 150,000.

A long time ago, during the 1700s, this area was part of West Florida, which was a British colony. Settlers were attracted to the abundant timber resources found here. Some tried to live here in a camp called Poplar Head near a small spring, but they failed to make much progress, and the settlement had to be abandoned during the United States Civil War.

Dothan was incorporated in 1885 and began to revitalize during the reconstruction period after the Civil War. It became an area full of cotton plantations. The entire cotton crop was devastated in 1910 by insects called boll weevils. The farmers started growing peanuts to survive. The peanuts did much better and are still grown today.

In contemporary times, Dothan is known as the “Peanut Capital of the World.” The town provides one-quarter of the annual peanut harvest in America, which is a huge amount.
