About Malabar, Florida

Malabar is a small community of about 3,000 people located directly south of Palm Bay in Brevard County, Florida, on the west bank of the Indian River. It started as a 40-acre plot of land where the Glatter family raised vegetables from the early 1900s to sell to the residents of nearby Melbourne, Florida.

Malabar is a Spanish word that means 'bad sand bar.' It was named this because ships that came too close to the shore would get stuck on a sand bar in the shallow waters of the Indian River that runs north/south next to Florida's Atlantic coast. Going due east from Malabar across the Indian River for about one mile, there is a thin peninsula that separates the Indian River from the Atlantic Ocean. On this stretch of land, there is the nice Indian River Lagoon Preserve State Park.

Malabar is right on the Indian River, so all the water sports activities are enjoyable. On a nice day, having a picnic at the Malabar Community Park is fun. If you go a bit west of this park, you will find the Malabar Scrub Sanctuary, with walking trails and plenty of bird-watching opportunities.

You can find the Sand Hill Trail Head and A Tuttle Paved Trail for a nice hike east of the park. You will find the Cameron Wildlife Preserve if you go a bit north. There are lots of walking trails to enjoy there too.
