The Augusta Canal, built in 1845, starts at Martinez. It captures the power of the Savannah River with a hydroelectric dam. This project provides water and transportation to the city. Many factories were built along the canal because of the abundant, inexpensive electrical power. Tourists enjoy taking a boat ride down the canal or hiking and biking on the trails created along the shorelines. The Augusta Canal National Heritage Area has educational exhibits about the project.
