About Martinez, GA

The 2020 Census counted the population of Martinez as 34,535. This suburb of Augusta is an unincorporated area of Columbia County and is included in the Augusta, Georgia, Metropolitan Area.

The history of the area includes the construction of the Augusta Canal in 1845, which starts in this town. The canal created a way to harness the power of the Savannah River, bringing water and transportation. Factories sprung up because of it. The canal’s history is shown in exhibits at Columbia County’s Visitor Center and the Augusta Canal Discovery Center. Tourists can enjoy a boat ride down the canal or a stroll on the walkway that leads from Martinez to downtown Augusta.

In 1869, José Martínez y Saldivar, a super-rich Cuban man, bought a large plantation of many square miles, which he named “El Cordero Rancho.” Cordero is the Spanish word for lamb. He wanted the ranch land to raise sheep. Eventually, this land became the town named Martinez after his legacy. Twenty acres of the Cordero ranch are still preserved as a historic site and museum. It contains his hacienda home, barns, farm buildings, and the original water tower.
