About Watkinsville, GA

Watkinsville is the county seat of Oconee County. The 2020 Census counted 2,896 people living there. It is part of the Athens-Clarke County, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city limits form a circular shape with a crisscross of State Highways 15 and 24 passing through the center of the town.

The town was named after Colonel Robert Watkins in 1791. At that time, the town was on the edge of the dangerous western frontier of the new United States. Methodists built a church and settled in the area. The town was officially incorporated by the Georgia General Assembly in 1815.

Watkinsville was originally in Clarke County. Then, in 1875, the Georgia General Assembly created Oconee County out of the southwestern part of Clarke County.

The area is known for its legendary oak tree in nearby Athens, GA. For bragging rights and a conversation starter, visit The Tree That Owns Itself, which is a historical site at the edge of downtown Athens, a few miles from Watkinsville. Legend says the white oak tree owns itself and eight feet of surrounding land. Colonel William Jackson deeded the tree the ownership rights in 1890, and no one has disputed the deed since.
