About Collinsville, IL
Collinsville is a lovely small town in Madison County, with a tiny piece of the city in St. Clair County. The population is 24,366 (2020 U.S. Census). It is about a half-hour drive east of St. Louis's city center. It is considered a suburb of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan statistical area.
The Native people from this area are called the Mississippi tribe. Thousands of years ago, they built a city called Cahokia on the land where Collinsville now stands. They created massive, terraced structures that are made from earthwork, which are called mounds in contemporary times. The largest example of this architecture is the Monks Mound. This structure has a base that is greater than the base of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. Tourists come from all over to visit Monks Mound and the over seventy smaller mounds that are still able to be seen today.
Cahokia was the largest pre-Columbian city north of Mexico, with a population of up to 30,000. This was a larger city than any American city before 1800. About the same number of people live in modern Collinsville as the residents of Cahokia.
In contemporary times, the city is known for being easily accessible from the St. Louis Downtown Airport.
