Elkhart is also dubbed the "Band Instrument Capital of the World." To celebrate, over 500 community volunteers work together each year to organize and facilitate a summer Jazz Festival.

History buffs will visit the Elkhart County Historical Museum, the Havilah Beardsley House, and the Ruthmere Museum. Ruthmere also proves interesting to patrons interested in art and architecture.

Art lovers can visit the Midwest Museum of American Art. Several museums in Elkhart, including the RV museum and the Hall of Heroes Superhero Museum.

Flower lovers can stroll through the Quilt Gardens and view vibrant garden depictions of quilt squares and plenty of hand-painted murals.   • Greenleaf Manor/East Lake Estates: This suburban neighborhood comprises medium and small single-family homes. There are apartments in small apartment buildings in this neighborhood. Many of the homes shelter their owners. Most dwellings were built during 1970–1999, with some older buildings as well (built between 1940–1969). Employed residents commute between 15–30 minutes one way. The median home price is $218,744. Renters pay an average of $1,169. This neighborhood is unique because 12.5% of residents speak Italian at home.
  • Jamestown: The large and medium homes in the Jamestown community are predominately owner-occupied. Jamestown is known as a family-friendly suburban neighborhood with highly rated-schools. Primarily constructed during 1970-1999, the area does have some older homes from 1940 to 1969. The median housing cost is $188,890. On average, the residents who do rent pay $991 per month.
  • Simonton Lake: This suburban neighborhood includes college-educated, white-collar senior citizens. 32.8% of employed residents work in professional, executive, and managerial occupations. The average one-way commute is 15 to 30 minutes. The median housing price is $161,993, and the average rent is $1,250.
  • Dunlap: Another suburban neighborhood, Dunlap Homes, was built between 1970 and 1999, although some older homes also exist. Many homes are owner-occupied and are either large or medium single-family homes. Some residents live in mobile homes. Dunlap has an above-average demand for housing, and the median housing cost is $161,702. Renters pay around $1,250 per month. The Dunlap neighborhood is unique because only 76.8 % of households speak English. Other languages spoken in the community include Spanish and Polish. 13.2% of area residents were born in a country other than the United States.

The public schools in Elkhart are collectively known as Elkhart Community Schools. The system consists of two high schools, three middle schools, and 14 elementary schools.
