About Georgetown, KY
Georgetown is in Scott County, Kentucky, about 13 miles north when driving from the center of downtown Lexington via Highway 25. The 2020 U.S. Census counted the population of Georgetown as 37,086.
When founded in 1782, the city was called Lebanon. However, in 1790, it was renamed Georgetown in honor of the first president of the United States, George Washington.
This city is best known for being a strong candidate for the birthplace of Kentucky bourbon. The liquor was first made in 1789 by Reverend Elijah Craig using the waters from the Royal Spring that runs through downtown.
In more modern times, the city grew exponentially during the late 1980s when Toyota built an automobile manufacturing plant in Georgetown. Toyota is the largest employer in the area, with a more than 10,000-strong labor force.
The city is a part of the larger Lexington-Fayette, KY Metropolitan Statistical Area, with a population of 518,611 (2020 Census). Georgetown has all the amenities of big city life that can be found in nearby Lexington but with more of a rural lifestyle.
