About Whitesburg, KY

Whitesburg boasts a humble sized population of less than 2,200 residents surrounded by the beautiful Kentucky Appalachian Mountains. Named after the U.S. Representative of Kentucky, John Daughtery White, Whitesburg was founded in 1842 and incorporated as a town in 1872. Not too long after, around 1911 to 1912, a community of Italian stonemasons settled there in the beginnings of the Nashville Railroad and Lexington, KY. They discovered the rich stone resources of the local Kentucky Appalachians and transformed Whitesburg with their artistry in stone architecture. These notable features can still be found today, including an arched stone bridge by Roy Crawford, buildings built from sandstone from the local Kentucky River, and a number of historic downtown buildings built from stone between 1914 and 1925. Some of Whitesburg's original paved streets also remain, including a street called Broadway with imprints from chickens, a cow, and a barefoot child running across the road when the cement was wet.

Besides its notable geology, Whitesburg is renowned for its rich musical heritage and Appalachian culture. Their major newspaper, The Mountain Eagle, has won numerous awards for its timely coverage and continues to be owned by the founding Gish family since 1956. Newcomers inspired by the enchanting, simple life of Eastern Kentucky will feel right at home and well away from the stresses and pressures of the digital and social media age. Whitesburg's generally mild climate is also attractive, with warm, humid summers and cool winters with smaller chances of snowfall compared to its Appalachian neighbors further north.
