About Clarkston Michigan
Clarkston is also known by the more formal name, ' The City of the Village of Clarkston.' This long, proper name for a city with less than 1,000 inhabitants comes from its history. Clarkston was founded in 1830 by a settler named Linux Jacox. It was two years before a second home was built. It became an incorporated village in 1884, and then, in 1992, it was incorporated as a city.
While Clarkston may be tiny, it makes up for that by having quite a remarkable character. Some beautiful and luxurious mansions on the lakeside are outstanding examples of American architecture from the previous century. There are over 100 homes in Clarkson's Historic District. A walking tour of the vintage homes is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
Clarkston is only 42 miles north of Detroit. The proximity to Detroit, known as 'Motor City,' and its lakeside location attracted Henry Ford, the founder of The Ford Motor Company. Ford owned a summer home on the lake in Clarkston and a weekend cottage on Main Street. Ford operated a mill in the Mill Pond in the town center. This heritage building now contains art galleries mixed with office space.
