About Roscommon, MI

Roscommon is a small village with a population of 1,075. It is the county seat of Roscommon County. The town dates back to the 1800s. The first settlement of Irish immigrants was in 1845. The post office opened in 1873, and the village became incorporated in 1882.

A lush forest on all sides surrounds this village. An old-growth forest on the southside is called the Roscommon Red Pines Dedicated Natural Area. The village has the same name as a small town in Ireland with about 5,000 people, famous for its castle. In the Irish town, there was a monastery from the 5th century next to some woods called Ros Comáin. This name changed into the anglicized version of Roscommon.
