About Becker, MN

Becker is in Sherburne County in the middle of the state, nestled between the Elk and Mississippi Rivers. The population is 4,877 (2020 U.S. Census). It is a nice one-hour drive from Minneapolis and only 19 miles from St. Cloud. Highway 10 runs right through the center of town.

Historically, a post office opened at the Becker location in 1870 after the city was platted in 1867. It is named after a state legislator, George Loomis Becker, who did a lot of work with the railroads to bring people and economic prosperity to the area.

In this area, Xcel Energy operates the Sherco power plant. It is the largest coal-powered electrical plant in the state.

In 2020, a metal recycling center caught fire. It burned for many days, making national news. The fire started in a crushed car with fuel in the tank. The local firefighters responded, and those from all the surrounding communities also. A decision was made to let the fire burn itself out because of the lack of water needed to put the flames out. The town’s air filled with acrid black smoke from the burning tires. People had to stay inside to avoid breathing the air pollution.

On a lighter note, the Becker High School football team is a very successful program. The team won 19 conference championships and 14 section championships. They made 16 state tournament appearances and played in seven prep bowls. Dwight Lundeen has been the head coach since the program started in 1970.
