About Gulfport, MS
Gulfport is the second-largest city in the state by population. Along with Biloxi, it is the dual-city county seat of Harrison County. The U.S. 2020 Census determined the population to be 72,926 within the city limits of Gulfport and 416,259 people in the Greater Gulfport-Biloxi metropolitan area. The city got its name from being a port on the Gulf Coast.
In the late 1700s, the first European explorers came to this territory of the Choctaw native people. The French had a settlement here until 1803, when the land stolen from the native people was sold by France to the United States in a real estate deal called The Louisiana Purchase. The United States government paid pennies on the dollar (about four cents per square mile) to the French King for what was essentially stolen native people’s property.
In 1830, the Indian Removal Act forced the native people to leave the territory and go to Oklahoma. This effort was undertaken by the white settlers who wanted the land to raise cotton.
Before Gulfport existed, there was a settlement called Mississippi City, which was, at that time, the county seat of Harrison County from 1841 to 1902. Gulfport was incorporated in 1898. The area of Mississippi City is now a suburb of East Gulfport.
In contemporary times, the city is best known for petroleum, agricultural, and other important products that ship from this port and the nearby casinos in Biloxi.
