About Imperial, MO

Imperial is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jefferson County. It is a suburban area with a relaxed attitude. The area is on the west bank of the Mississippi River. A CDP does not have a town charter and is not incorporated as a city. It is designated as a place for U.S. Census purposes; however, it is the same as any other unincorporated part of Jefferson County, and the County has jurisdiction over the area.

Across the river from Imperial CDP is the state of Illinois. Interstate 55 runs directly through the area. The 2020 census counted the population as 4,947 people. It is part of the Greater St. Louis Metro area.

Historically, European settlers came to this land near the river in the 19th century. They built homesteads, farms, and plantations on the Native American land. By the late 1800s, the area was flourishing. It was given the name “Imperial” due to the richness of the fertile soil that produced abundant crops.

In contemporary times, families like to go bowling at the Imperial Bowl and catch a local sports game at the St Joseph Athletic Field. Rock Lake is a small lake that is on the east side of Imperial, and you might find some crawdads in the nearby Rock Creek. For some serious boating activities, you can launch your boat into the Mississippi River at the Hoppies Marina.
