About Aberdeen, NC

Aberdeen is a small town in Moore County. The 2020 census determined the population to be 8,516. The population increased from 6,350 in 2010, which was about a 30% growth over the decade.

In 1745, emigrants came from Scotland to settle in this area. The abundant pine forests were a source of cut timber that was transported down the Cape Fear River to Wilmington, North Carolina. During the American Revolution, the locals mostly supported the British side.

Things went from bad to worse during the Civil War. About 1,500 of the residents were Confederate soldiers. One-third of them died in the fighting. It took until 1877 for a post office to be established at Blue’s Crossing, which was the town’s name before Aberdeen. It was another 11 years before Aberdeen became an official town.

The Raleigh and August Air Line Railroad connected the area to the rest of America. The freight trains were used to transport timber. In the early 20th century, tobacco farming became the main driver of the local economy, and the rails carried tobacco products along with timber.

In contemporary times, the city is best known for the Pinehurst Golf Resort. Tourists enjoy this part of North Carolina. It is a favorite town for retirees.
