About Jacksonville, NC
The city of Jacksonville is the county headquarters for Onslow County. The population is 72,723 (2020 U.S. Census). The number of residents grew by 3.7% over the past ten years.
Historically, the native people lived in this area for thousands of years before the settlers came. The Tuscarora Wars were fought to take their land. By 1713, the native people were forced out, and the settlers moved in. The New River area became a major production center for wood products such as turpentine. The original site for the Wantland’s Ferry that took goods and passengers across the New River is now the downtown waterfront park in contemporary times.
In 1842, the city was incorporated. The city got its name to honor President Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States.
In more recent times, the city became known for the Camp Lejeune military base. Construction began in 1941 with the federal government's acquisition of 100,000 acres along the banks of the New River. The population increased dramatically due to all the construction workers coming to the town looking for work on the project. Now, it is the largest marine base on the East Coast.
