About Kent, OH
Nestled along the Cuyahoga River in Northeast Ohio, the city of Kent is best known as the location of Kent State University. As such, many aspects of life in Kent revolve around the academic calendar. With a population of about 29,000 people, it's the largest city in Ohio's Portage County.
Kent is home to a charming Central Business District filled with shops, eateries, and more than 20 public parks. Kent is less than an hour from major metropolitan areas like Cleveland and Akron but offers an atmosphere much like a small town.
What to do in Kent, OH
The city of Kent provides many opportunities to enjoy live music, outdoor recreation, sporting events, and other activities. You'll also find a wealth of shopping and dining on and around Main Street. These are some of the most well-known attractions in Kent:
- Franklin Mills Riveredge Park, which follows the course of the Cuyahoga River through the heart of Kent, is mere footsteps from Downtown. The park is a hiking, fishing, kayaking, and picnicking destination.
- The Kent Stage is a historic theater and venue in the heart of Downtown Kent that frequently hosts live music and comedy shows.
- Dix Stadium is one of the top places in the Kent area for sports fans. The stadium is home to the Kent State Golden Flashes football team, the Kent State women's soccer team, and the women's lacrosse team, among others.
- The Kent State University Museum is home to a wide range of ever-changing exhibits but is best known for its collection of historical fashion and costumes.
- The Haymaker Farmers' Market on Franklin Avenue in Downtown Kent offers produce and other local goods every Saturday morning, April through November, from 9 am to 1 pm.
Kent is also known for various festivals and events yearly. Top festivals include the annual Art & Wine Festival, Kent Rainbow Weekend, and music-centered events like the annual American Roots Music Festival and Kent 'Round Town Music Festival.

Kent was originally settled because the Cuyahoga River provided the current necessary for water-powered mills. It later grew to become a railroad town and a manufacturing hub. Today, Kent is home to a diverse workforce that is neither predominately white-collar nor predominately blue-collar. The largest employers are Kent State University and the utility company FirstEnergy.
Food service (14.52%), sales (13.42%), and office/administrative support (10.30%) make up some of the largest shares of the Kent job market. Although a relatively small city, Kent, has several neighborhoods. Most are residential areas, with quiet streets lined with duplex houses and single-family homes. Others offer easy access to the University, as well as the shopping and dining options of Downtown.

- Fairchild is a largely residential neighborhood on the northeast side of Kent. One of the more recent neighborhoods to develop, many homes were built between 1970 and 1999. The median home price in Fairchild is $179.900.

The Kent City School District serves about 3,400 students across four elementary school buildings, one middle school, and one high school. The district includes the City of Kent, the neighboring Franklin Township, and the Village of Sugar Bush Knolls. The Kent City School District has a 91% graduation rate and ranks 85th among Ohio's 605 school districts.
Kent State University's main campus is also in Kent. The third-largest college in Ohio, Kent State, offers over 300-degree programs and has an enrollment of over 35,000 students (about 27,000 at the main Kent campus).
