About Ravenna, OH

Ravenna is a charming small town in the middle of the heartland of America, just 15 miles east of Akron. It is the county seat of Portage County. If you drive on the 59 Ohio Turnpike going west, you go through Kent, a sizable college town due to Kent State University being there. Ravena is tiny compared to the two larger nearby cities of Akron (population 197,597) and Kent (population 28,215). The 2020 U.S. Census counted the population of Ravenna as only 11,323.

If you want the amenities of a big city, it is a short drive on the turnpike; however, most people move to Ravenna to get away from the city. Residents like living in this gorgeous natural setting with great lakes for fishing and wonderful places for hiking, such as the Triangle Lake Bog State Nature Preserve just north of the town.

The town's history is that many European immigrants settled in this area in the late 1700s. Ravenna was founded in 1799. It was named after a village in northern Italy. The area has always focused on manufacturing. It began with the manufacturing of glass in the mid-1800s and the train's arrival in 1851. Then, starting in 1905, A.C. Williams Co. produced the most cast iron toys worldwide. There was an amazing amount of output from the little town of Ravenna.

Nowadays, it is best known for the Ravenna Balloon A-Fair, which began in the 1970s and has been a yearly attraction ever since. Dozens of hot-air balloons fill the air. The celebration includes a parade, food, and live entertainment.
