About Ravenna, OH

If you drive about 15 miles east of Akron, Ohio, you find the small town of Ravenna. The town is in a beautiful part of Ohio with beautiful lakes for water sports, boating, and fishing. It is just north of the Triangle Lake Bog State Nature Preserve. The town of Kent with Kent State University is just a few miles west on the Ohio Turnpike 59.

The town is the county seat of Portage County and has a population of 11,323 (counted by the 2020 U.S. Census).

Ravenna got its name from a city in northern Italy. It was first settled in 1799 by people of European descent. Many were new immigrants to the United States who lost their homes on the East Coast during the American Revolutionary War, and then they moved further west.

It became an area that attracted craft workers with the Clark Carriage Company, founded in 1831, building high-end hearses. Then, a glassworks industry started up in 1848. The train arrived in 1851. In 1905, A.C. Williams Co. became the world's largest cast iron toy company.

In contemporary times, this area is best known for its annual Ravenna Balloon A-Fair, which started in the 1970s. The festival has hot-air balloons, drive-ins, parades, and live entertainment.

What to do in Ravenna, OH

The town has the wonderfully comforting feel of a small town, yet it is close enough to easily drive to the big city of Akron with all the modern amenities.

  • Ravenna Historic District: Downtown Ravenna underwent a multi-million-dollar renovation that improved the area while preserving some famous Riddle Block buildings. The Riddle Block buildings are part of the National Register of Historic Places. It is a pleasant afternoon excursion to take a walking tour of this area and enjoy the local pubs at night.
  • Antique Shopping: If you are hunting for a special treasure, try your luck at the AAA 1-76 Antique Mall. It is considered one of the best places for antique lovers to shop.
  • West Branch State Park: Fishing is superb at this state park, with bass, perch, and bluegill in abundance. The campgrounds are well-maintained and attract visitors from all over. There are wonderful beaches on the lake.
  • Windmill Lakes Golf Club: Golfers will enjoy this professional course and its country club atmosphere.

This little town is a well-established area dating back to just after the United States gained its independence from Great Britain. Most Europeans moved here. Many came from Sweden and Poland.   • Ravenna South: This is a slightly less expensive area. The median home price is $273,802.
  • Shalersville: On the northern side of town, the median home price is $247,059.

  • Augerberg: This is the least expensive neighborhood on the east side of town, north of the West Branch State Park. It has a median home price of $72,587 due to many manufactured and mobile homes.

Ravenna, OH School District

The public school district is the Ravenna School District. The district has an excellent student-to-teacher ratio of 14:1. Annually, the district invests about $13,728 per student in education and support services.

There is only one private school in the town: Ravenna Christian School (K to 4th). The nearest other private school is a Catholic school called St. Patrick's (K to 8th) in Kent.

The town does not have any colleges or universities. It used to have one private two-year school called Fortis University, but it closed. The nearest college is Kent State University, only 6 miles away in Kent.
