About Greenville, SC

Greenville is the county seat of Greenville County. The 2020 census counted 70,720 people living in this town. The town is part of a large area called The Upstate, with a combined population of 1,487,610 (2020 census). This area in South Carolina is popular. In 2015 and 2016, this town was the fourth fastest-growing community in the United States.

Before the settlers came, this was Cherokee land and reserved for their use as a hunting ground. Colonists were forbidden to enter the area until Richard Pearis came from Virginia in 1754.

Pearis established friendly relations with the Cherokee nation and took a Cherokee woman as his wife. He learned their language and became a good friend. He was given a generous tract of 100,000 acres of land by the Cherokee Nation in 1770 to use for a plantation on the Reedy River. This is now the area of downtown Greenville.

Pearis lost his plantation during the American Revolution when he backed the side of the British Loyalists. His plantation was burned, and he was jailed by the American Patriots, never to return to his land. The Cherokee land eventually became a part of South Carolina, and Greenville became a village in 1831.

In contemporary times, the city is best known for its terrific schools, numerous big companies offering jobs, and being one of the largest urban centers in the South. The population, economy, opportunities, community spirit, and development of the city continue to expand.
