About Spartanburg, SC
Spartanburg is the county seat of Spartanburg County. The 2020 census counted 38,732 people living in this town. It is part of a large area in northwestern South Carolina called The Upstate. This region comprises ten counties with a combined population of 1,487,610 (2020 U.S. Census).
The history of the city is interesting. After a treaty was negotiated with the Cherokee Nation in 1753, Spartanburg was formed in 1785. It got its name from the “Spartan Regiment” militia that fought in the American Revolutionary War.
It took until 1831 for the city to be officially incorporated. It has the nickname “Hub City” because of the many railroad lines emanating from the city's center that form the shape of a wheel hub.
During World War 1, Camp Wadsworth was established in this area as the training grounds for the National Guard. Then, in the 1940s, Camp Croft was established as a training ground for army soldiers during World War II.
In the later part of the 19th century, the city was a major textile manufacturing center with more than 40 factories and textile mills. This remained the city’s main business until the 1950s when the factories moved offshore to parts of the world with cheaper labor.
In contemporary times, this town and the surrounding area are known for its historic sites, abundant springs, waterfalls, rivers, and nature preserves.
