What You Should Know About Old Hickory, TN

Old Hickory was the product of an agreement between the federal government and the DuPont corporation in 1918. The deal involved the construction of a large factory and town along Hadley's Bend, which is part of the Cumberland River. Just as planned, the factory was made up of nine separate units, each able to produce approximately 100k pounds of gunpowder per day.

DuPont constructed a permanent village, initially called Jacksonville, to house the factory workers as a tribute to Andrew Jackson. By November 1918, the area already had 300 dwellings. The homes were primarily helpful, but the more substantial ones featured architectural elements from more popular revival styles. Many remnants of this self-sufficient, post-World War I town are present in Old Hickory today, making it a famous historical site in Tennessee.
