About Lubbock, TX

The county seat of Lubbock County is the City of Lubbock. The population is 257,141 (U.S. 2020 Census). The Greater Lubbock metropolitan area, which includes the surrounding cities, has a population of 328,283 (2022 census estimate).

The native people were here for thousands of years before the white European settlers came and took the tribal lands of the Comanche people. Lubbock came into being after the Indian Removal Act of 1830 forced all the native people to move to the “Indian” territory of Oklahoma.

In 1876, Lubbock County was founded by Thomas Lubbock. Thomas was the brother of Francis Lubbock, who was the governor of Texas during the Civil War. In 1884, the tiny Lubbock outpost had a post office. In 1891, the city of Lubbock became the county seat and in 1898, the city was incorporated when the first railroad arrived in the area.

The area surrounding Lubbock County is the biggest cotton-growing area in the world. The sixth-largest Texan university is Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Lubbock is known for being the musician Buddy Holly’s birthplace.

Lubbock is called “Hub City” because it is like the center of a wheel hub encapsulating the surrounding counties.
