About Nacogdoches, TX

Nacogdoches is a vibrant small town and the county seat of Nacogdoches County. The 2020 census counted 32,147 people living here.

Being the oldest city in Texas, Nacogdoches, sometimes called “Nac” for short, has some amazing history. This area was inhabited by native people over ten thousand years ago. The Nacogdoche tribe are Caddo Indians. The Tula tribe of the Caddo Indians first saw Spanish Conquistadors in 1541 in Arkansas when the Hernando de Soto Expedition arrived. The Spanish had a violent clash with the Indians.

In 1716, Spanish explorers arrived here. They started a mission called Misión Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Then, the French came and tried to create a village but failed. They were defeated in the French and Indian War. In the 1760s, the French left.

In 1772, the Spanish also left because it was too expensive to maintain an outpost in the hostile wilderness; however, they returned in 1779 to build a pueblo that became Nacogdoches.

Nacogdoches’ history reflects the diversity and resilience of the Lone Star State. Nacogdoches is also a city that fosters creativity and learning, as the home of Stephen F. Austin State University and a thriving arts and entertainment scene.
