About Nacogdoches, TX

The county seat of Nacogdoches County is the city of Nacogdoches. The population is 32,147 (U.S. 2020 Census). It is the oldest city in Texas.

The native people had been here for more than ten thousand years before the European settlers came. Nacogdoches is the name of the tribe of Caddo Indians. They left during the 1760s after the French and Indian War. The Spanish also left for a period, starting in 1772 and returning in 1779. When they came back, they were led by Colonel Antonio Gil Y'Barbo and began to build a pueblo that is Nacogdoches.
