About San Angelo, TX

San Angelo is the county seat of Tom Green County. It is 162 miles southeast of Odessa via Highway 57. It is in the Concho Valley, and the Concho River runs through the city.  The U.S. Census (2020) counted 99,893 people living there. If you include the surrounding communities that make up the larger San Angelo metropolitan area, the population is 118,182.

The first settlers from Europe came from Spain. In 1632, two Franciscan friars who were missionaries tried to start a mission to “help” the native people. The effort lasted a mere six months. In 1659, the Spanish Castillo-Martin expedition passed through the area. In 1654, the Spanish Diego de Guadalajara expedition also came through the area.

Nevertheless, it was not until the 1800s that the area began to develop. Spain, Mexico, and Texas once claimed the area. It became a part of the United States in 1867 with the construction of Fort Concho. It was home to the U.S. Calvary, including the famous Black Calvary nicknamed the “Buffalo Soldiers.”

In contemporary times, San Angelo is known for the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo, annual events that began in 1932 and continue to this day.

San Angelo is a cow town full of rodeo cowboys, college students from Angel State University, and military from Goodfellow Air Force Base.
