About Victoria, TX

The county seat of Victoria County is the city of Victoria, which has a population of 65,534 (U.S. 2020 Census). This small city is near the coast of the Gulf of Mexico but 30 miles inland, which makes it safer from hurricanes. The city was named after General Guadalupe Victoria, the first president of Mexico after Mexico gained independence from Spain. The city was founded in 1824. Texas and Mexico fought over the town. During the Texas Revolution, Mexico lost control of the town in the Battle of San Jacinto, and the American settlers drove the Mexican Army out.

In modern times, the city is a regional trade hub because of its excellent location and proximity to the Gulf seaports.
