About Victoria, TX
Victoria is the county seat of Victoria County. The 2020 census counted 65,534 people living in this small city near the coast by the Gulf of Mexico. The three counties of the larger Victoria Metro Area have a population of 111,163 (U.S. 2020 Census). It is in a great location, 30 miles inland from the ocean, which reduces the risk of hurricane damage and storm surges. It is about a two-hour drive from the larger Texan cities of Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and Corpus Christi.
The city got its name from the first president of independent Mexico, General Guadalupe Victoria. The city was founded in 1824. The town was fought over during the Texas Revolution and was under the control of the Mexican army until they lost at the Battle of San Jacinto, and the Anglo settlers drove the Mexicans out.
In contemporary times, the city is known as a regional trade center because of its strategic location and proximity to the Gulf ports. The University of Houston established a campus in Victoria in 1971, which brings many college students to the town.
