Morehead, Kentucky is a small town with around 8,000 people that live there permanently and about 10,000 that attend Morehead State University. The university is very popular with students who come from all over Kentucky, other parts of the U.S., and some foreign countries. Even though this is a simple country town, it is chocked full of students, so it has a nice young person’s vibe as well.

Morehead is located in a beautiful part of Kentucky in Rowan County. It is next to the Daniel Boone National Forest. The city is about an equal distance from Huntington, West Virginia and Lexington, Kentucky in the heart of the Kentucky bluegrass countryside.

The rural life in Morehead is very peaceful. Guest visitors like to stay in the Brownwood Cabins. This is a charming bed and breakfast with a group of individual cabins in the woods.

Morehead weather is very typical for the area. While it will get warm in August it will never be more than a pleasant 85°F. It is the coldest during the winter around January, sometimes going down to 27°F. The area is especially beautiful when the trees are losing their colorful leaves during autumn.

What to do in Morehead Kentucky

Morehead has plenty of natural places to enjoy for hiking and a beautiful lake. It has a nice museum, fine shopping for antiques, and great BBQ to eat. It is fun to support the college-sports teams and go to Morehead University to see the games. Every September there are plenty of festivals to enjoy and the town’s campsites fill with thousands of visitors who come to participate.

Attractions: For those that like outdoor activities, Morehead is a great place to go hiking, backpacking, and camping. Fishing is good and the swimming in summer is delightful on the nearby Cave Run Lake, which is a short two and one-half mile drive from downtown Morehead.

Museum: Morehead has the Kentucky Folk Art Center that shows work created by artists from the local area. Some of the arts and crafts are available for purchase in the Museum Store.

Shopping: One shopping center not to miss is the Morehead Peddlers Market. This is an indoor flea market and it has many antique stores where shoppers can hunt for an undiscovered treasure.

Restaurants: An essential meal to try is the Southern style BBQ served at Pop’s restaurant. It is a local favorite and delicious. There is also a nice Italian restaurant called Melini’s Cucina. The pizza is great at Pasquale’s and at the Rise and Roll Brick Oven Company. If you just want simple American food, try the Come Home Diner. Root-a-Bakers has nice soups and vegetarian food. There are Mexican restaurants, steakhouses, Asian choices, and plenty of national brands of fast food as well in Morehead.

Stadium: It is fun to go to the Morehead State University stadium to watch the football team play during football season.

Festivals: All the big annual events happen in September. There is the Poppy Mountain Bluegrass festival held in mid-September that features over 100 bands in an area with over 1,000 campsites. This is one of the largest bluegrass festivals in America and a huge party. Also during September, there is the Morehead Motorcycle Ride through the beautiful countryside, the Morehead Arts & Eats Fest, and the Cave Run Storytelling Festival held at the lakeside on Twin Knobs Beach.
