Kent was originally settled because the Cuyahoga River provided the current necessary for water-powered mills. It later grew to become a railroad town and a manufacturing hub. Kent State University's main campus is also in Kent. The third-largest college in Ohio, Kent State, offers over 300-degree programs and has an enrollment of over 35,000 students (about 27,000 at the main Kent campus).
