Irmo is just east of Lake Murray. Lake Murray is a 50,000-acre lake reservoir created by the construction of the Dreher Shoals Dam to capture the water from the Saluda River. The Dominion Energy Company uses the water passing through the dam to generate electricity. The lake is also the source of freshwater for nearby communities.

Irmo is a small town with a population of about 11,000. It was founded in 1890 as a farm community that built up around a train refueling station. It is known for the tasty green vegetable called okra, which is grown in abundance in the region and is processed at a local plant.

The Irmo town hall s located in a historic home called the Lown House that was donated by the Lown family. The home was moved to a new location at 7300 Woodrow Street. This is at the intersection with Columbia Avenue that used to be a vacant lot owned by the town. The Lown House is a beautiful, fully-restored Victorian home that now houses the municipal government. The town hall sits behind two gigantic oak trees that have been there since before the town started.
